The electioneering process in Osun State under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been presented by his supporters as reflecting a commitment to democracy, fairness and national unity. As President, Tinubu has continued to emphasise the importance of strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions, with developments in Osun State offering an example of his administration’s approach.

Despite political differences, President Tinubu has repeatedly called for dialogue and cooperation among political actors. His approach towards Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has been characterised by supporters as one that places governance and the interests of citizens above partisan differences.

This approach was tested following the decision by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to freeze an Osun State Government account on August 5, 2026, ahead of the August 15 governorship election. The EFCC said the action was connected to an investigation into the management of ecology, intervention and FAAC funds. Governor Adeleke objected to the action, describing it as unconstitutional and politically motivated.

President Tinubu subsequently expressed concern about the timing of the action and directed the EFCC to return to court to seek the appropriate legal process regarding the account restriction. He also communicated with Governor Adeleke on the matter.

Supporters of the President have cited the development as an indication of his stated commitment to ensuring that federal institutions do not undermine the credibility of elections, regardless of political affiliations.

Beyond the account issue, Tinubu’s administration has pursued major economic and policy reforms, including the removal of the petrol subsidy, changes to the student loan system and increased emphasis on infrastructure development. The administration has described these measures as necessary reforms aimed at addressing longstanding economic challenges and improving opportunities for Nigerians.

In Osun State, the President’s supporters say his emphasis on dialogue and peaceful political engagement has helped encourage a focus on issues rather than personal or partisan disagreements. His calls for political parties and candidates to respect electoral rules and accept the outcome of the democratic process have also been presented as part of efforts to promote peaceful elections.

As Osun State navigates its political process, the emphasis on peaceful participation, respect for democratic institutions and cooperation between different levels of government remains important.

For supporters of President Tinubu, his handling of the Osun account-freeze episode and his broader approach to governance demonstrate a preference for institutional processes, dialogue and stability. They argue that continued cooperation between the Federal Government and the Osun State Government can help create conditions for greater development and democratic dividends for the people of the state.
