The parents of a seven-week-old infant were charged on Monday after their child was taken to the hospital with injuries from what appeared to be severe physical abuse, police said.
The parents, identified as Secret McCleve-Sar, 21, and Tyrone Jones, 22, both of Philadelphia, were first taken into custody on Saturday, Aug. 8, following a police manhunt for the couple after their infant was removed from the hospital on Friday, Aug. 7, without a medical release, police said.
The infant, identified as a baby girl, was taken to Jefferson Hospital on Friday, where medical professionals recommended she go to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, police said.
The girl was taken to CHOP, where doctors there recommended she be admitted, but her father removed her from the hospital without a medical release, police said.
“Given the extent of the injuries that were observed just by medical professionals, they immediately contacted police, and police immediately and relentlessly began looking for this couple,” Philadelphia Police Inspector DF Pace said on Saturday.
Investigators were able to track the couple down to a home in Northwest Philadelphia at around 3 p.m. on Saturday, where the parents were taken into custody, Pace said.
NBC10 was outside a home near East Penn and Magnolia streets in Northwest Philadelphia at around 5 p.m. on Saturday, and found officers working there in connection to the case.
The baby girl was returned to CHOP for medical care, Pace said.
“The child has clear indications of physical abuse, and the extent of that physical abuse is still under evaluation at the hospital at this time by medical professionals at CHOP,” Pace said.
The couple faces charges of aggravated assault, kidnapping, criminal conspiracy, endangering the welfare of a child, as well as several other crimes.
