Philly Colombian community rallies after deadly 7.4 magnitude earthquake

Philadelphia’s Colombian community is coming together to support people back home after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake centered in Cali, Colombia, killed more than 200 people and injured at least 2,600.
Authorities believe 4,000 people are missing as rescue crews race to save people trapped in the rubble. Rescue efforts are continuing in hard-hit areas including Pereira and Cali as crews search for the missing and families face devastating losses.
At Cafe Tinto, a Colombian-owned coffee shop in Philadelphia‘s Fishtown neighborhood, workers and customers are sharing stories about how the earthquake has affected their families and communities.
“It hit us really hard,” Cristian Rubio, of Cali, said.
In the Philadelphia area, local nonprofits such as Philly Accion Colombia quickly jumped into action, gathering resources and bringing together members of the Colombian community across the region.
“Our heart is half here and half back home, so when things like these happened you immediately want to be there, want to support them, so I immediately saw the Colombian community trying to get together, figuring out what we can do,” Joy Huertas said.
A vigil outside Philadelphia City Hall is scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. NBC10’s Isabel Sanchez will be there to cover the event.
The vigil was organized by Acción Colombia Philadelphia. The organization will also be holding an aid drive this weekend.
