According to city health officials, there have been 46 confirmed infections, including 22 hospitalizations, so far. No deaths have been reported
Legionnaires' disease is a type of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria, which grow in warm water and can spread through contaminated water vapor

The mayor added that tie city has "ordered every single one of those buildings to clean and disinfect their cooling towers on the basis of our initial results.” The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene clarified that the mayor was referring to the buildings that received a positive PCR test, not every building in the affected zip codes. City Council Speaker Julie Menin had asked for cooling towers in every building in the area to be cleaned, regardless of test result.

The city's Department of Health said Friday afternoon that it has tested more than 180 cooling tower systems, and of that, 31 buildings have been ordered to drain, clean and disinfect their cooling towers.

According to city officials, 19 of the positive buildings have already taken these steps to remove the source of the exposure and it expects all 31 buildings to be completed by Saturday.

Mamdani said that the water is still safe to drink and bathe.

“You are fully safe to continue to use all of those different aspects of living in our city,” he said.

According to city health officials, there have been 46 confirmed infections, including 22 hospitalizations, so far. No deaths have been reported.

Legionnaires' disease is caused by Legionella bacteria, which thrive in warm water. People suffering from the disease can get symptoms that include a cough, fever, muscle aches and difficulty breathing. It is not a contagious disease.

People at the most risk from the disease include people over the age of 50, smokers or vapers, people with chronic lung disease, people whose immune systems are weakened or people taking medications that suppress their immune systems.
