Investigators have now identified 31 cooling towers testing positive for the bacteria in three zip codes.
Even after every cooling tower that tested positive for Legionella bacteria has been disinfected, Upper East Side residents still wanted answers during a city-hosted virtual town hall Monday night.
According to the city, additional buildings’ cooling towers have tested positive and have been ordered to have them disinfected. Those locations are expected to be released soon.
Health officials now say at least 59 people have been infected and 48 have been hospitalized, although most have been discharged.
“Ultimately, the Legionella bacteria like warm water. And standing pools of warm water are the perfect place for that bacteria to replicate,” Department of Health Commissioner Alister Martin said.
Investigators have now identified 31 cooling towers testing positive for the bacteria in three zip codes. Each tower has been cleaned, according to investigators.
Health officials stressed that a positive cooling tower does not automatically mean that the building is where people got sick.
Confirming the exact source can still take weeks.
“We will be doing ongoing inspections, as I noted, to see where we are seeing compliance fall short,” Deputy Commissioner Corinne Schiff said.
City Council Speaker Julie Menin wants the city to disclose the epicenter. For some residents, the biggest concern isn’t just the bacteria — it’s how they learned about it.
“No [communication] from management whatsoever,” Michael Klein said. “Someone sent me a news link, and I found out our building was on the list via that way.”
Others say they now want to know what changes will be made to prevent another outbreak.
“What’s the current cleaning schedule for these cleaning towers? Are there any plans to change that, especially since it’s so prevalent just naturally,” Erin Mahany said.
Health officials say anyone who was in the affected ZIP codes during the past two weeks and developed symptoms should seek medical evaluation.
