Hanwha Aerospace announced on August 14 that it has been selected as the preferred bidder for the ‘Trajectory Correctable Fuze System Development Project’ supervised by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration.
The core of this project is to invest a total of 164.2 billion won ($126.3 million) by 2032 to develop a trajectory correctable fuze to be applied to 155mm ammunition for the K9 self-propelled howitzer. The trajectory correctable fuze is a core component mounted on the front part of the ammunition, which serves to increase the hit rate by correcting the trajectory of the shell in real time based on GPS information after firing.
Existing ammunition had a limitation in that accuracy decreased as the range increased. However, applying the trajectory correctable fuze can narrow the impact error range to one-sixth of the current level. When precision strikes become possible, targets can be neutralized with fewer rounds of ammunition, thereby increasing operational efficiency.
Operational advantages are also clear. If the number of firings decreases, the durability of the K9 self-propelled howitzer barrel can naturally be preserved longer, which directly leads to easing the burden of logistics support. In particular, the newly developed fuze is evaluated as highly versatile because it can also be used by replacing the old fuzes mounted on existing ammunition.
South Korea has been pushing to secure technology for improving precision following the extension of the self-propelled howitzer range since the mid-to-late 2000s. Hanwha Aerospace has accumulated related technological capabilities by participating as a prototype manufacturer or lead contractor in government-led core technology projects.
An official from Hanwha Aerospace defined the trajectory correctable fuze as a core technology for future artillery systems, expressing a commitment to contribute to strengthening self-reliant defense capabilities and expanding the export territory of K-defense through the localization of advanced defense technologies.
The government and Hanwha Aerospace plan to complete this system development by 2032 and prepare for actual deployment.
