Hanwha Systems has signed a contract with the Defense Agency for Technology and Quality for the ‘Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) Equipment Installation Project for Logistics Support Ships and Rescue Ships’ and has begun full-scale development.
This project is being promoted as part of the ‘Existing Force Performance Maximization Project,’ which improves the problems of already deployed weapon systems to increase combat power. The target vessels are a total of four ships, including one logistics support ship, two surface rescue ships, and one submarine rescue ship.
Previously, non-combat ships such as support and rescue ships faced difficulties in visually identifying topographical features during nighttime or severe weather conditions, as electro-optical equipment was not reflected in their designs at the time of construction. This was because, unlike combat ships that are equipped with fire control equipment by default, they lacked auxiliary devices for securing visibility. As the maritime operational environment has changed, the necessity of installing precision observation equipment on these vessels has been consistently raised.
The biggest challenge of this project is securing physical space inside the existing vessels to install the equipment. To resolve this, Hanwha Systems decided to apply the ‘Target Acquisition and Designation System (TADS)’ technology developed for the Light Armed Helicopter (LAH). TADS, due to the characteristics of aviation equipment, features a maximized miniaturized and lightweight design, making it easy to install even on existing ships with narrow spaces.
The equipment has proven its technical reliability by passing strict aviation military requirements, including extreme environments ranging from minus 35 degrees to 55 degrees Celsius and indirect lightning strikes. Hanwha Systems plans to utilize the already secured defense specifications to shorten the deployment period and complete the installation within two years. Once the equipment is introduced, it will interoperate with the operational video transmission system, which shares surveillance video in real time with the command and friendly ships, thereby increasing command efficiency.
Through this project, Hanwha Systems has expanded its aviation electro-optical technology into the naval vessel sector, securing new market opportunities. The company is the enterprise with the most experience in the country, currently supplying 100% of the Electro-Optical Tracking Systems (EOTS) and Infrared Search and Track (IRST) equipment to all combat ships operated by the South Korean Navy.
Following the completion of equipment development for major vessels such as the next-generation patrol killer and the next-generation frigate, the company is currently developing the EOTS for the Korea Destroyer Next Generation (KDDX).
Yoo Moon-ki, head of the naval business division at Hanwha Systems, emphasized that the company will preemptively identify the military’s requirements and supply the optimal solution to maximize the performance of the existing forces.
