Labor and management at Samsung Biologics have agreed to enter a post-dispute mediation process to resolve conflicts over wage increases and the improvement of the personnel system.
The Samsung Biologics labor union announced on August 14 that it had positively reviewed and decided to accept the management’s proposal for post-dispute mediation presented during the 24th collective bargaining session held on August 11. Representatives from both sides will initiate official administrative procedures by submitting the signed documents to the Incheon Regional Labor Relations Commission on August 14.
Post-dispute mediation is a system implemented with the consent of both labor and management after the initial mediation has ended, aiming to resolve labor disputes. The labor relations commission acts as an arbitrator to coordinate the gap between the two sides, and the procedure can only be initiated with the consent of both labor and management.
This agreement is highly significant as it represents a change from the hardline standoff that has continued so far. Following the breakdown of negotiations with management, the Samsung Biologics labor union conducted a partial strike in late April, followed by a full-scale strike from May 1 to May 5.
Even after the strike, the union has continued a work-to-rule struggle, refusing overtime and holiday work, thereby pressuring the management. The management also confirmed the fact that it had agreed to post-dispute mediation with the union, showing its willingness to resolve the situation.
Labor and management plan to accelerate the sluggish negotiations, taking this agreement on post-dispute mediation as an opportunity. A union official reported that although it is expected to take some time for practical preparations such as forming the committee, a consensus has been reached to proceed with future discussions rapidly.
