Workers at Micron's Taiwan facilities in Toayuan purportedly met up to discuss a strike due to unfair bonuses, suggests a social media post on the Taiwanese platform Dcard. The workers decided to hold a meeting to discuss bonuses stemming from the AI wave, and the meeting plans to discuss whether the current bonus policy of 200% of a worker's salary is sufficient to match policies at other companies, such as Samsung.

Strikes at Korean memory manufacturer Samsung made headlines earlier this year after workers objected to the low rate of bonuses given the AI boom. They pointed towards Samsung's larger memory rival, SK hynix, to claim that the bonus policies followed by the firm were insufficient given the rising fortunes of the AI market.

As part of their demands, the Samsung workers asked management to remove their bonus caps, pay a bonus equal to 15% of the semiconductor business's operating profit and annual pay hikes. After the back-and-forth, management and unions finally reached a deal through which the workers would receive 10.5% of the operating profit as a bonus and not face a 50% cap on bonuses, which limited them to 50% of their salary.

Now, a post on the Taiwanese social media platform Dcard suggests that Micron's worker union in Taiwan is also interested in providing more information about a strike. A machine-translated version of the poster shows that the union responded to requests from "grassroots colleagues who wanted to learn more about labor unions and information on how to strike." It invited union members and others to join them for evening sessions due to be held earlier this week on the 30th. The Dcard post itself was made on July 28th.

The poster lists Micron's policy of a 200% bonus cap not allowed to be exceeded for more than five months and asks whether the readers agree with the rule. It adds that Samsung Korea's cap was 50%. At the event, the union intended to share the results of its research related to strikes in Korea along with "some ideas for future actions to fight for fair distribution."

Samsung's decision to change its bonus rules for the semiconductor business had led to strikes by the company's broader employees. Members of the DX division wore black in protest over a 100x bonus gap with semiconductor workers.
