Congratulations go to four postgraduate students who won awards at the 2012 Oxford Computer Science student conference. 

• Martin Lester: best talk award for Information Flow Analysis for JavaScript
• Robin Neatherway and Steven Ramsay:  best poster award for: Higher-Order Model Checking
• Andrew Paverd: best Abstract award for Hardware Security for Device Authentication in the Smart Grid

The best abstract prize was decided by the organising committee.    Co-organiser Tom Gibson-Robinson commented “Whilst it might sound like a cliche, it has to be said that the standard of the abstracts, talks and posters was very high (particularly of the abstracts) so it was very hard to pick a winner.”

The best poster and best talk prizes were picked by James Worrell, who was also the keynote speaker.   James first became associated with the Student Conference when he gave a talk whilst a DPhil student in the Department (then the Computing Laboratory) in the late 1990s.

The student conference has been an important part of Department life for many years. It became a student-run event in 2004 and is open to all students and staff within the Department. The event gives participants the chance to hone their speaking skills; good practice for taking part in academic conferences. This year the Conference, which took place on Friday, 16th November 2012 included 15 talks, with all of the Department’s research theme represented.  The conference dinner (held at Rewley House) was a big success too with just over 40 attendees.
