Steamboat Springs’ second annual Zucchini Classic is set to return on Saturday, Sept. 12 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Main Street Steamboat Farmers Market, giving youth and adults alike a fun opportunity to test their design and creativity skills, states a Thursday news release. 

Participants will compete in one of three categories — light, medium and heavy — depending on the weight of their zucchini. Racers may bring their own home-grown zucchini or can purchase one at the farmers market. 

Prizes will be awarded to category winners, and winners will be named for three additional awards: best design, best decoration and best creativity. Main Street Steamboat officials note that last year’s entries included “everything from superhero zucchinis to a surprisingly elegant ‘Zucchini Swan.'” 

Registration will take place from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., with races beginning at 10:15 a.m and awards at 11:30 a.m.. The registration fee is $10, and everyone races a minimum of six times. 

Proceeds from the event, presented by Main Street Steamboat and Cub Scout Pack #194, will support downtown programming and youth leadership.
