A cyclist from Seattle is documenting his cross-country road trip on TikTok, which he began at the Golden Gate Bridge, and he aims to reach New York City within a month.
Walker Sutton began his cross-country ride on August 4 by dipping his bike tires into the Pacific Ocean at the Golden Gate Bridge, a ritual he considers essential to making the journey official, as CBS Sacramento reports.
"If you ever do one of these cross-country bike rides, you gotta put your tires in the water when you start or else it's not a cross-country ride for some reason," Sutton said.
After leaving the bridge, he headed north and continued through Marin County before taking a shuttle over the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, which is currently closed to bicyclists during a portion of the week as part of a pilot program.
Sutton, who moved out of his Seattle apartment before the trip and drove his belongings to the Bay Area for storage, made it to Sacramento on his first day. He followed the American River Trail and ultimately slept alongside the trail after being unable to find a campsite, only to be warned about rattlesnakes the following morning.
On his second day, Sutton passed through Folsom and encountered the Johnny Cash Trail, though he later regretted not stopping for a photo with its giant guitar pick. The ride then became more difficult as temperatures reached 94 degrees and he made his way into the Sierra Nevada, stopping about every 10 minutes to find shade while still facing another 2,600 feet of climbing.
He reached South Lake Tahoe by the end of the day, where he attempted to shower at a campsite but discovered he didn't have the quarters needed to use it.
Sutton has been documenting the trip on TikTok as he continues toward New York City, with the monthlong journey still in its early stages. He said he hopes following his progress will encourage others to take on challenges of their own.
