A Virginia man is facing a felony weapons charge after New York State Police discovered an unregistered handgun during a traffic-related investigation in Brooklyn.
According to State Police, the arrest occurred Thursday when a trooper assigned to Troop NYC, SP Brooklyn stopped to check on a disabled Nissan Sentra blocking the eastbound Interstate 278 exit ramp at Exit 27.
Inventory search led to weapon discoveryPolice said the trooper spoke with the driver, identified as Dashari N. Williams, 23, of Virginia, and determined the vehicle was uninsured.
“An inventory of the uninsured motor vehicle was conducted in preparation for an impound, which led to the discovery of an unregistered handgun, magazines, and ammunition,” State Police said in a news release.
Williams was taken into custody without incident.
Felony charge filedAuthorities said Williams was transported to the NYPD 84th Precinct for processing before being taken to Brooklyn Central Booking for arraignment.
He was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a Class C felony under New York law.
The charge is an allegation, and Williams is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
