Update: Extended Coco trailer, directors double down on 2027 release

Update [Sun 16th Aug 2026, 1:30am]: During the D23 Kingdom Hearts "Deep Dive" panel, Disney and Square Enix shared an extended Coco trailer for Kingdom Hearts IV. It shows the world of Coco, Mickey's paper universe, and there are gameplay segments featuring Mickey, Donald, and Goofy.

Kingdom Hearts 4 co-director Tai Yasue has also reiterated the game will be arriving in 2027, and development has been "very smooth" so far:

"At this year's D23 we were finally able to announce a release date for Kingdom Hearts IV, I'm really excited about that as well, and I can confidently say and promise that it will launch in 2027. And yeah, so schedule-wise, development is very smooth. It's not like an 80% thing, 90% thing, it's a 100% thing, so we'll be there for sure. So, promise you that."

Creative director Tetsuya Nomura added to this, stating he's aware of fan speculation about delays and says this won't be happening:

"We announced the game is going to be coming late 2027, and I saw online some people were saying the actual release date might still get pushed back. I just wanted to set the record straight that is not happening."

At Disney's D23 event this week, Kingdom Hearts fans got another look at Kingdom Hearts IV in a new showcase trailer.

The end of the trailer also confirms the anticipated title will be launching on all platforms, including the Switch 2, in "late 2027". Here's the official announcement, which also mentions how Pixar's Coco will feature in Sora's new adventure.

"Revealed during the Disney Entertainment Showcase on August 14, 2026, KINGDOM HEARTS IV is launching in late 2027! A brand-new adventure awaits as the world of Disney and Pixar's Coco joins KINGDOM HEARTS IV."

In some related news, Disney has also announced a Kingdom Hearts anime series is "coming soon" to Disney+ and the Disney Channel.

"Ready for a new adventure? An original Kingdom Hearts anime series inspired by the beloved video game franchise is coming soon to Disney Channel and Disney+"
