Wes Nelson appeared to shade Molly-Mae Hague by stating he needed Love Island to become famous.

The former Love Island star, 24, appeared on the new Channel 4 documentary Life After Love Island: UNTOLD.

When asked if he would have achieved his level of success without the show, Wes said: 'You can bet your bottom dollar that I would've made sure I was in the position, one way or the other. 100 per cent.

But he admitted: 'Has it helped me, has it boosted me? Of course. I'm not here to say it's not done anything for me, this is all my work. No, it has.

'It's given me a platform. But how you use that platform is very very important, because there's hundreds and hundreds of islanders now that have had this platform.'

It appeared he was hitting back against Molly-Mae's attempts to distance herself from the show that made her name.

Speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast in January, Molly-Mae said she believed she would have achieved the same levels of success without the series due to her 'work ethic'.

Diss: It appeared he was hitting back against Molly-Mae's attempts to distance herself from the show that made her name

She insisted: 'There was a side of me that thought, I can actually do this without going on this show.

'I think I was about 170,000 followers at that point and that was all organic growth. There was no TV shows or anything.

'I’d say now if I hadn’t gone on the show I’d like to say I’d still be hitting a million followers because I had that really good work ethic with my Instagram.'

Molly-Mae argued Love Island had 'just elevated me', saying she didn't credit it with getting her to where she is now.

She claimed: 'When you come off that show you’re all on a level playing field and it’s totally up to you where you go with it, and I just knew that I wanted to go to levels that no-one had ever gone to.

'And that’s why I never really speak about it, because I just feel like I don’t owe… that’s not the reason why I am where I am now.

'Yeah it gave me a platform, yeah it elevated me, but the things I’ve done now are not because of Love Island. They’re because of me and what I decided to do with my work ethic.'

She also told MailOnline: 'The things that I've achieved since coming out of that show aren't really down to the show they're more down to my drive and ambition to do big things.'

Elsewhere in the documentary, Wes said that he felt that the influencer lifestyle was 'very fake' and not for him.

The reality star said he tried to go down that path at the beginning but fell behind and returned the money.

He admitted: 'It was actually making me quite depressed, like real depressed, really anxious all the time.

'The whole thing is very very fake. I don't want to be a part of that, I want to be part of something real, make a difference, make people happy and show my talents.'

He added that there was a 'stigma' surrounding people coming from a reality star background that they had to fight against.

Wes said: 'There's this stigma surrounding reality TV and then transitioning into music or acting or things like that. Most people say you're talentless.'
