England’s Ellis Kottas was left ‘lowkey traumatised’ at the prospect of losing her silver medal after Commonwealth chiefs ordered a re-race following a mass wheelchair crash.

Four out of seven athletes finished women’s T54 1500m final on Wednesday night after four crashes, three overturned wheelchairs and a disqualification.

Scotland’s Melanie Woods finished first with Commonwealth record of 3min 33.39sec but the athletes were told the following morning that they must race again.

Kottas said: ‘While I’m lowkey traumatised if I’m going to medal I want to do so on my own merit, so I will go out and give it all I’ve got. If I don’t medal so be it, I’ll still have the incredible memories of lifting that England flag.'

The decision was criticised by Team England’s chef de mission, Jonny Riall, who said: ‘We are incredibly disappointed by the late decision. While there is no formal protest process available to us, we have strongly challenged the decision.

'The race officials did not halt the race at the time of the incident, nor was any immediate decision made to declare the race void or order a rerun. 

'Our priority is the welfare of our athletes. We will now do everything we can do support Ellis during the extremely short turnaround.'

Compliments to the chef as Emily reigns supreme

Not since the Finnieston Crane was in action have Glasgow’s docklands witnessed such large masses of metal being thrown around.

Emily Campbell, with lions weaved into her red and white hair, shifted 278kg – 115 in the Snatch and 163 in the Clean and Jerk – to win gold with a record Commonwealth lift.

On the banks of the River Clyde, England’s Olympian showed her adoring fans why she is regarded as the sport’s great entertainer.

She blew kisses to the crowd and told her rivals that there is ‘life in this old bird yet’ before collecting her medal from the Duchess of Edinburgh.

It takes thousands of calories to fuel a weightlifter and next month Campbell will continue to fly the flag for her sport when the takes part in Celebrity MasterChef.

‘MasterChef is definitely more nerve-racking!’ she laughed.

‘It’s really nice for me to do something without being Emily the weightlifter, to just do something as Emily. My signature dish is Caribbean and that’s all I’m going to give you because I want you to watch it! It’s another platform to put weightlifting in, another time for us to have that spotlight on us.

At 32, the weightlifting game is beginning taking its toll on her joints. Olympic gold still eludes her but she is yet to commit to competing at LA 2028.

‘We’ve got to look at the practicalities of LA,’ she said. ‘We have to do a slightly different qualification process to other sports. We’ve got to look at that and we can get our body through. 

'If I go to LA, I would want to be in contention for a medal, so we want to make sure that that’s feasible. We just have to be very sensible about decisions and hopefully you’ll see me there.

'But for now, we enjoy what happened. We have some good food, maybe a few drinks. We're out in Glasgow!'
