A Team England competitor at the 2026 Commonwealth Games confessed she'd been left "low-key traumatised" after being forced to race again despite winning silver the first time

Team England athlete Ellis Kottas was cruelly denied a medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games despite initially having the silver medal secured. The 22-year-old said she was "low-key traumatised" after being stripped of her podium finish in the women's 1,500-metre wheelchair race in Glasgow.

The women's 1,500m T54 was originally held at Scotstoun Stadium on Wednesday evening, where Glaswegian Melanie Woods shattered the Games record en route to claiming gold. Kottas finished in third before being elevated to silver after Canada's Nandini Sharma was disqualified for her involvement in an early collision that also derailed Australian Eliza Ault-Connell and Noemi Alphonse of Mauritius.

Para-athletics officials took the decision to re-run the race on Friday morning following appeals from both the Australian and Mauritian teams. Kottas, who herself had been sent into a wall amid the opening-lap mayhem during the original race, finished fourth in the re-run.

Woods claimed top spot on the podium for a second time, once again setting a new Commonwealth Games record. However, Team England and Kottas were left with little to show for their efforts.

In an Instagram post shared after the first running of the race, Kottas wrote: "I'm sure that most of you are aware of the crash that impacted half of the athletes (I didn't expect my commonwealth debut to be me crashing into the wall! ) but I continued and took bronze.

"Unfortunately the crash was deemed to have been caused by an athlete who has since been disqualified (hence the silver) but the para-athletics authorities have decided to rerun the race.

"While I'm lowkey traumatised, if I'm going to medal I want to do so on my own merit, so I will go out and give it all I've got. If I don't medal so be it, I'll still have the incredible memories of lifting that England flag."

Regrettably, that proved to be all she would take away from the race after crossing the line outside the medal positions. Despite the setback, Kottas remained positive following the race and seemed in good spirits while giving interviews.

Jonny Riall, Chef de Mission for Team England, revealed he and his colleagues had "strongly challenged" the choice to stage the race a second time. He pointed out there was no official appeals procedure accessible to them despite no attempts to stop the initial race following the crash.

"The race officials did not halt the race at the time of the incident, nor was any immediate decision made to declare the race void or order a rerun," he said. "Ellis and the team, therefore, proceeded on the understanding that all competition procedures had been completed and the result confirmed.

"Our priority is the wellbeing of our athletes. We will now do everything we can to support Ellis during the extremely short turnaround between receiving this news and being asked to race again."

Woods, meanwhile, admitted that the circumstances surrounding the re-run had "dampened the excitement" of her victory. However, she lightened the mood by quipping that should she be summoned for a third attempt at the race, she's "not doing it."
