A Proton-branded DC charger for EVs is probably not something that you’d expect to see outside of a dealership for the eMAS electric cars. That may change at some point later this year, as Proton New Energy Technology (Pro-NET) chief branding officer Salawati Mohd Yusoff hinted at the brand’s intention to develop its own branded DC chargers. Considering these are mentioned as separate from the ones at dealerships, chances are these will be public chargers.

This comes via the Jangan Kecam podcast on YouTube, in response to the question whether Proton has any commitments to contribute to increasing the number of charging stations in the country, and if there is any intention to create its own charging station ecosystem. Salawati said, “we are actually looking forward for [sic] something ‘special’ this year, which I might not have the privilege to announce today”, but the intent is there for the company to develop its own branded DC chargers. “Soon … within this year”, she added.

The statement comes at the tail end of the answer, as she starts off with the mention of Proton’s investment into the existing charging infrastructure. This includes RM40 million into developing its telematics service provider (TSP) ecosystem, and another RM4 million into the integrated live charging map. Salawati also mentions that Pro-NET makes sure that all of its dealership outlets have charging stations, and that the company works with other charge point operators (CPOs) for condominiums.

If you wish to listen to her statements for yourself, the question was raised around the 23-minute mark of the podcast episode. It’s probably worth noting that, throughout the episode, you’ll see the disclaimer that it is “brought to you by Pro-NET”. Also present as a guest in the podcast was David Tiah, a Pro-NET product specialist, answering various questions about Pro-NET and the Proton eMAS electric cars.
