A 22-year-old was killed when his motorcycle crashed at high speed into a sign in a construction zone on Hwy. 401 in Pickering early Saturday.

Ontario Provincial police say the deadly single vehicle collision occurred in the westbound lanes of the busy highway approaching Brock Rd. around 2:25 a.m.
“A motorcyclist, for unknown reasons, reportedly at a high rate of speed, was in the (construction) closure when (his bike) struck one of the electronic signs, resulting in the rider being ejected from the motorcycle and receiving fatal injuries as a result,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said Saturday in a video posted on X.

The motorcyclist, a Scarborough resident whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
A section of the westbound Hwy. 401, between Westney and Brock Rds., was completely shut down for much of the morning following the fatality.
No further details were immediately available.

“At this point, the family (of the victim) has been notified and the investigation is continuing,” Schmidt said.
The fatal motorcycle crash comes on the heels the OPP urging drivers to focus on safety after a deadly Civic holiday weekend ended with 5 people killed in Ontario road crashes.
