Power outages stretched into another day across northwest Indiana following what NIPSCO called “unprecedented” damage to the power grid from Tuesday’s derecho.
As of 4 p.m. Friday, the utility reported 179,000 customers remained without power. Since the round of storms earlier this week, the company said it has restored electricity to 138,000 customers.
NIPSCO estimates that more than 60% of its customers were impacted, making it the single-worst event in its history. Gary experienced the highest number of outages at around 38,000, while Hammond reported around 13,900 customers without power and Merrillville had around 12,700 outages.
Approximately 90% of electricity is expected to be restored by Tuesday at 11:59 p.m., with full restoration expected by 11:59 p.m. on Friday.
At the peak of the storm, more than 400,000 customers were without power in ComEd’s coverage area, with more than 300,000 impacted in Indiana.
While most of the long-lasting outages were reported in northwest Indiana, approximately 15,000 ComEd customers continued to be affected by outages on Friday evening, according to the utility’s outage map.
In ComEd’s coverage area, roughly 12,600 outages were reported in Cook County, with another 2,600 in Will County.
