Thousands of Chicago-area residents remain without power after devastating severe storms this week, but how soon could the lights come back on?
As of noon Tuesday, more than 174,000 ComEd customers were without power across the Chicago area after those severe storms generated breathtaking wind gusts in excess of 80 miles per hour, knocking over power poles and causing significant damage to trees and structures across the region.
Nearly 15,000 customers in Indiana remain without power according to NIPSCO, with crews working in both states to try to bring the lights back on for their customers.
According to ComEd officials, outages ultimately impacted more than a half-million customers at the height of the storms on Monday, and officials say they are trying to restore power as quickly as possible.
“We know many customers who remain without power following Monday’s storms are frustrated – and we get it,” ComEd wrote in a notice to customers Tuesday. “The reality is that northern Illinois is experiencing a level of severe weather unlike what we’ve seen in recent years. In fact, our service area has already experienced more storms this year than in all of 2025, with five months remaining in the year.”
So when could the lights come back on?
According to the company, the goal of crews in the field is to restore power to at least 80% of impacted homes by Wednesday afternoon, but officials cautioned that some customers may remain without power through Friday night as crews work to clean up debris and reconstruct power lines and poles.
Fortunately the weather should be cooperative for those crews, as no significant storm activity is expected in coming days, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
