MPs boasted about staying up for England's World Cup triumph today as the nation nurses sore heads and weary eyes.

Politicians from all parties have been on social media congratulating the national team - with many highlighting that they watched the match live.

Unlike much of the rest of the country, that was made somewhat easier for MPs as the House of Commons does not sit until 2.30pm on a Monday.

Shadow culture secretary Nigel Huddleston posted an image of a deserted Westminster Bridge this morning, joking: 'Where is everyone?'

Keir Starmer and Andy Burnham were among those who braved the 2am UK-time kickoff against Mexico - delayed from the original 1am due to thunderstorms.

They were treated to one of England's best performances, seeing off the host nation at the hostile and high-altitude Azteca stadium.

Sir Keir said: 'One of the greatest England matches I've ever seen. We are through to the quarter finals!'

A spokesman said later that the PM watched the action upstairs in the Downing Street flat with his son.

'He's a touch sleep-deprived this morning, but incredibly proud of the team, and incredibly proud to be English after that performance,' the spokesman said.

'He's seen England play over many years but this morning's victory in the heat of the Azteca Stadium, and at altitude and against a host nation, was up there for him as being one of England's best-ever performances.

'He's very much looking forward to the quarter-final on Saturday.

'In the coming days, the St George's Cross will hang high and proudly over No10, and Downing Street will look glorious in St George's Day bunting in the July sun.'

Sources also revealed that Sir Keir had intervened to help stop FIFA moving the fixture forward by six hours, after the Football Association voiced concern that players would not have time to adjust to the altitude.

Mr Burnham waited until 9.34am to give his verdict, singling out Jordan Pickford's contribution: 'Epic from England and Everton's No1.'

Labour MP Stella Creasy said: 'I have no idea how I do the school run this morning after a red card and a penalty…

'Like having had ten espressos and a red bull chaser…'

Mr Burnham had urged England fans to grab the 'golden chance' to be in the pub until the early hours.

The PM-in-waiting said he wanted the country to 'make the most' of the World Cup showdown even though it is a 'school night'.

Employers are braced for staff to turn up late, extremely weary or not at all.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has also been pleading with parents not to let kids skip school after watching the game.

Labour MP Chris Bloore posted a picture of himself celebrating the result
