Qualcomm has officially completed its acquisition of Modular Inc., a company known for developing AI-native software infrastructure. The acquisition is aimed at strengthening Qualcomm’s artificial intelligence software capabilities across smartphones, PCs, automotive platforms, edge computing, enterprise applications, and data centres.

With the deal now complete, Qualcomm plans to combine Modular’s software platform with its high-performance, energy-efficient computing technologies to simplify AI development and deployment across a wide range of hardware.

Qualcomm confirmed that Modular’s core products will continue to operate under their existing identities.

These include:

• Mojo, the AI-focused programming language
• MAX, the AI execution engine
• Modular Cloud, the company’s cloud deployment platform

The company also plans to increase investment in these platforms while expanding support for developers building AI applications.

According to Qualcomm, Modular will continue following its open and heterogeneous approach, allowing developers to optimise AI workloads across multiple hardware architectures instead of being tied to a single platform.

The software stack supports:

• NPUs
• Custom AI accelerators

This approach enables developers to build and deploy generative AI applications across different computing environments with improved performance.

As part of the acquisition, Chris Lattner, Co-Founder and CEO of Modular, has joined Qualcomm Technologies as Executive Vice President of Advanced AI Software and Platforms.

He will lead Qualcomm’s efforts to expand its AI software ecosystem and accelerate the development of advanced AI platforms across multiple industries.

Qualcomm says the acquisition will help accelerate deployment of generative AI and agentic AI workloads across several sectors, including:

• Smartphones and PCs
• Automotive platforms
• Industrial systems
• Enterprise AI
• Edge computing
• Cloud infrastructure

The integration is also expected to improve software-level optimisation across Qualcomm’s heterogeneous computing architecture, helping developers build AI applications that run efficiently on different processors.

The acquisition gives Modular access to Qualcomm’s global hardware ecosystem, enterprise relationships, and large-scale distribution network while enabling Qualcomm to strengthen its AI software platform alongside its growing portfolio of AI processors.

By combining advanced software tools with specialised AI hardware, Qualcomm aims to simplify AI development and improve deployment across modern computing environments.
