TEMPERATURES ARE TOASTY, and the nice notion of whisking your woofer away for a wonderful day out at a spot that isn’t quite as scorching, all told, feels like something of a summer daydream. There are plenty of Golden State getaways that you and your four-footed friend can make, but if you want to be near a scenic lake, at a high elevation, and watch as your buddy engages in all sorts of energetic activities, you’ll want to look to Big Bear on the last Saturday in July. That’s when Puptopia returns, a free festival catering to canines and the humans fully obsessed with them. Over 3,000 dogs are expected to attend the July 25 event, which will set up sunny shop at Veterans Park. A variety of diversions, areas, and offerings will fill the park, with programming on the main stage providing a Fido-fun focal point. Thrilling dog stunts are on the line-up, and agility performances, too. But if you and your pup want to try your hand/paw at the array of animal-centric offerings?
MAKE FOR THE PUPFORMANCE ZONE, where “… dogs can traverse tunnels, ramps, jump-overs, and obstacles in an owner-led obstacle course.” If you have a little tail-wagger, something special is in store: Tiny Dog Races will give wee competitors a chance to show their stuff, adorable. Also? Any panting pups can make for the splash zone to cool down or the on-site “SPAW,” where services like “pet-icures” are on the menu. And a big ball pit? That, too, will festoon the grounds. Also adding flavor to the scene? A host of dog vendors, and the K9 Lounge, which will offer treats and sips for people and pups. Entry is complimentary but be sure to RSVP before wending your way up the mountain.
