When rainy or scorching weather hits, head indoors with these charming Tokyo date ideas.

Sometimes the best laid plans go awry thanks to Japan’s climate. The rainy season brings wind and rain; the summer keeps getting hotter; typhoons plague August and September; and the winter breeze can be biting. But if you know the city well enough, you don’t have to let bad weather force you to reschedule your date in Tokyo. There are many great indoor date spots that will keep you comfortable and dry if you know where to look, from museums to shopping to panoramic views. Our list below has you covered.

1. Tokyo Sky Tree (Oshiage) Take your connection to new heights.

Tokyo Tower might be the classic tower date spot in Tokyo, but if you want something a little different, then visiting Sky Tree is the perfect alternative.

The two observation decks within Sky Tree offer the most complete and eye-catching views of the city. The Tembo Deck stands 350 meters tall and has its own restaurant, glass floor panels, and a 360-degree view of the city. On the other hand, the Tembo Gallery is 450 meters above ground, and is known as ‘the world’s highest skywalk.’

If you’re willing to brave the cold, there are special illuminations that vary by day and season. To catch the most romantic views possible, the nightscapes here can’t be beat. Find an empty bench, sit down with your date, and look out into the city for the most dreamy way to end this date.

2. The National Art Center Tokyo (Nogizaka) Check the schedule before you go.

Couples interested in art and fine dining should definitely visit The National Art Center Tokyo in Nogizaka.

The NACT doesn’t have any collections or permanent displays but organizes scheduled shows set up by groups and organizations. These vary greatly from month to month — which is why it’s also a good place to visit regularly. As a date spot, you can enjoy seeing works of art that might never be shown in Japan again, as well as works by local artists in watercolor, calligraphy, and so on.

3. Shibuya Scramble Square (Shibuya) A short walk from Shibuya station.

Couples that want to enjoy the absolute latest in style, architecture, and Tokyo in general should enjoy a date at Shibuya Scramble Square.

Opened in 2019, Shibuya Scramble Square is the tallest building in Shibuya, standing at 47 floors (plus 2 basements) filled with shopping, dining, and ultra-modern entertainment. Those who aren’t afraid of heights will love Shibuya Sky, which houses the Sky Stage and Paradise Lounge. While window-shopping, couples can visit Japanese favorites like Good Design Store Tokyo and Tokyu Hands, and international brands like Jimmy Choo, Yves Saint Laurent and my personal favorite, Balenciaga. And when it comes to restaurants, there’s literally something for everyone: traditional Japanese, Taiwanese and Spanish hot spots, just to name a few.

4. Kabukiza Theater (Ginza) A unique cultural experience is best shared.

While seeing an entire kabuki performance might be a little pricey and hard to schedule, paying a visit to Kabukiza in Ginza can be just as enriching and makes for a great date, too.

In the theater, visitors can visit the Kabukiza Gallery, which displays authentic costumes and props used in performances. For example, if you’ve ever wondered how they make certain sound effects, they have the tools on display — and many of them you can try for yourself. There’s also Kobikicho Square on the second basement floor. At this official Kabukiza souvenir shop,  you’ll find all things kabuki and old Japan-related.

5. Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome (Yumenoshima) Surround yourself in nature and cool off with a tropical-themed drink.

For a date that still embraces nature while shielding yourselves from the elements, look no further than Koto-ku’s Yumenoshima. This lush green island used to be a repository for Tokyo’s garbage, but thanks to cleanup efforts, it is now the site of parks and the tropical greenhouse that will be the site of your outing. In this jungle in the metropolis, you can view the many tropical plants on display while strolling hand in hand. When you need a break, stop by the small cafe for a tropical-themed drink or snack while enjoying the verdant view from the windows.

6. Artbar Tokyo (Daikanyama) Bring out your inner artist.

Are you and your partner creative types? Would you consider yourselves to be hipsters? Then the perfect date for you both is in Daikanyama. While there are plenty of cafes and stores in this area for a full day date, Artbar Tokyo is one indoor spot that perfectly embodies the neighborhood.

Artbar Tokyo’s Daikanyama branch is just what its name implies: art, or rather making art, and a bar. Basically, before your date, you check their website, choose a painting lesson to take, sign up for it (times vary and update constantly), arrive, and create your masterpiece under the guidance of one of their amazing instructors — oh, and you can drink wine all the while. It’s a lot of fun and a good, carefree way to spend time with a special someone. Plus, you get to keep your art, too!

7. Yebisu Garden Place (Ebisu) Browse museums, watch a movie and dine at the best restaurants.

While technically a complex made up of a dozen buildings, Yebisu Garden Place is connected by underground tunnels (including to the station), so it’s the perfect date spot in inclement weather.

To start off your date, visit the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum or to the free Museum of Yebisu Beer, where you can learn the history of the brand. Cinephile couples may want to check out what’s playing at the Yebisu Garden Cinema, which plays art films and documentaries from around the world. Or if you want to shop, there’s a Mitsukoshi Department Store as well. There are loads of amazing restaurants to choose from, too.

8. Snoopy Museum (Machida City)  A must for Snoopy fans.

For a fun and nostalgic rainy day date, head to Machida City’s Snoopy Museum. Operating as a branch of the California-based Charles M. Schulz Museum, this Tokyo gem is filled with Peanuts’ wisdom and whimsy. 

Check out Snoopy goods from around the world, learn about the history of creator Charles Schulz and enjoy all of the cute Snoopy poses in the Snoopy Room. Every few months, the museum also holds seasonal exhibitions so even if you’ve popped by before, there is sure to be something new to see. It’s recommended to purchase tickets in advance for the smoothest entry.

9. Tachikawa Manga Park (Tachikawa) Boasting over 40,000 volumes, it’s a great way to spend a summer afternoon.

If you and your date are readers of Japanese manga, Tachikawa Manga Park is a great place to spend a rainy morning or afternoon. With over 40,000 volumes, and the entire surface of the facility set up as cozy reading nooks, prepare to be whisked away to the faraway worlds of the manga you are reading. 

Whether you are going to grab the same book or snuggle with your own volume, the Manga Park is a lovely, calm place to visit. And, when you’re done reading, you can always head to one of the nearby independent cafes around Nishi-Kunitachi Station and bond over your reading adventures.

10. Small Worlds Miniature Museum (Ariake) Make your own 3D figurine!

This unique museum offers lots of entertainment for couples on a rainy day. It is organized into several areas miniaturized using the latest 3D scanning and precision modeling technology. Explore the popular Creators Gallery, which features artwork by leading miniature artists, or a miniature version of Kansai International Airport, complete with models of airplanes landing and airport announcements.

There are workshops and events, as well as the chance to make your own 3D figurine. Couples will especially enjoy the evening version of the areas that offer beautiful, romantic night views and photo spots. If you want a snack, pop by the Museum Cafe, which also offers seasonal specials.
