Modern McLaren supercars are brutally fast, technically brilliant, and loaded with enough clever engineering to bend the laws of physics. However, even the finest paddle-shifted supercar cannot replicate the satisfaction of grabbing a metal gear lever and changing gears yourself. McLaren has finally decided to give enthusiasts that feeling again. Revealed during 2026 Monterey Car Week, the McL 6GT blends 1960s racing-car inspiration with carbon-fiber construction and an old-school approach to driver involvement. It is currently a concept, but this is not some auto-show fantasy destined to disappear inside a warehouse. McLaren says a production version will arrive in 2028.

The McL 6GT will become the first manual-transmission McLaren since the legendary F1 arrived in 1992. Its V8 sends power exclusively to the rear wheels through an authentic manual gearbox, giving drivers three pedals and complete responsibility for every shift.
McLaren has not released engine specifications yet, but outright numbers are not the main attraction. This machine is about mechanical connection, which is becoming increasingly rare as modern supercars chase faster lap times with automated gearboxes and increasingly complicated technology.

The wonderfully old-school hardware extends beyond the gear lever. McLaren has equipped the concept with hydraulic steering, tactile switchgear, and machined aluminum controls. Even the shifter features a three-dimensional Speedy Kiwi, connecting one of the most important touchpoints inside the car to McLaren’s earliest logo.

It sounds like a supercar designed for people who would happily sacrifice a few tenths of a second in exchange for the satisfaction of nailing the perfect downshift. Frankly, that is a trade we would make all day.
Bruce McLaren’s Forgotten Supercar Dream Is Finally Coming Alive

The McL 6GT takes its inspiration from the M6GT, Bruce McLaren’s unfulfilled attempt to transform the M6A Can-Am racer into a road-going supercar. More than six decades later, McLaren is finally revisiting that dream with modern engineering.
Its body sits extremely low and wide, with a sharp nose, flowing roofline, and chopped Kammback tail. Instead of covering the car in giant vents and aero appendages, McLaren has kept the surfacing remarkably clean. The cabin appears buried inside the body, giving the machine the tightly wrapped proportions of an old sports prototype racer.

Historic details are hidden throughout the design. The taillights reinterpret the original M6GT’s shape, Bruce McLaren’s signature appears in the engine bay, and the fuel cap carries an etched Speedy Kiwi. His original M6GT license plate even returns as a subtle graphic.
Underneath that gorgeous body sits a lightweight carbon-fiber monocoque, while the exterior panels are also made from carbon fiber. McLaren has not announced the car’s weight, price, or production numbers, but “highly exclusive” is usually supercar language for both extremely rare and painfully expensive.
The production McL 6GT will sit outside McLaren’s core lineup when it arrives in 2028. If the finished car retains the concept’s V8, hydraulic steering, rear-wheel drive, and proper manual transmission, Ford GT and Porsche Carrera GT owners may suddenly have some very tempting new competition.
