Alert readers may recall Porsche recently offered a seven-speed manual transmission in models like the outgoing 992.1 Carrera T. That trim now also gets a six-cog stick, one utilizing the same first sextet of ratios as the seven-er. Some who experienced that transmission opined the seventh gear was unnecessary even for highway cruising, to say nothing of the maze-like H-pattern atop the shifter knob (both reverse and seventh were atop the pattern, meaning there were no fewer than five characters on the shifter pattern’s top row).

Look, we get the argument that few human beings on this planet can change gears with the (reliably repeatable) speed and accuracy of a modern PDK transmission. In all likelihood, a lap of yer favourite race track will probably be quicker with such a gearbox, given its capabilities and propensity to let its driver focus on hitting the apex and just generally crush it, bro.

But the engagement provided by a manual transmission is a tactile sensation not offered by a PDK, lap times be damned. There’s something to be said for stirring a stick, not the least of which is also making a driver generally more connected and aware of the car they are piloting. Sure, a PDK can be objectively better, but can be cold and distant. In fact, driving a PDK is like dating a really hot person, yet knowing they totally aren’t into you. We digress.

Porsche says the 2027 911 Carrera S with MT Package will be priced at CDN$177,500 MSRP for a Coupe, and $191,800 MSRP for a Cabriolet — though Porsche’s vast options list all but assures just about every single one of these vehicles’ price tags will start with a two, and could very well knock on the door of a quarter-mil. Look for deliveries to start by the end of 2026, just in time for Christmas. Happy holidays, indeed.
