A former Rockstar Games developer, Mike York, stated that Grand Theft Auto 6 could be delayed until May 2027. His comments follow the opening of GTA 6 preorders, which list a November 19, 2026 launch date.

York clarified he has no inside information about a delay, and Rockstar has not officially indicated any change to the release date. GTA 6 generated $1 billion in preorders within the first hour.

Why a GTA 6 Delay Is Still Possible

Mike York explained to Indy100 through Covers that, based on Rockstar's history and his experience, another delay is possible. He noted that Rockstar is willing to postpone a release if any aspect of a game does not meet its standards.

York stated that even minor issues, such as a buggy mission, could prompt a delay, potentially moving the release to May 2027.

He emphasized he has no inside information about a delay and that Rockstar has not provided any official indication, but he considers a delay possible if standards are not met.

GTA 6 has been in development for nearly 13 years since GTA 5 and has already experienced several delays.

Rockstar typically releases polished open-world games with few major bugs. Earlier GTA titles required a high level of polish before release, as post-launch patches were not available. Both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in good condition.

Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive recognize fan expectations and understand that GTA 6's reception will impact their reputation. Since strong sales are expected regardless of timing, ensuring a high-quality release is likely a greater priority than meeting the scheduled date.

What GTA 6’s Missing Third Trailer Means

GTA 6 has not yet received a third trailer, which some fans anticipated before preorders began. Given the strong preorder numbers, Rockstar does not require further marketing to drive sales and could release the game on schedule without new footage. However, releasing additional footage, especially hands-on gameplay, could help reassure fans about the game's readiness.

Recent leaks have indicated GTA 6 will be shown off in August. York's comments are speculative and based on his previous experience at Rockstar, not on current information about GTA 6's schedule.

Rockstar has not announced any change to the November 19, 2026 release date, and the May 2027 date is York's estimate of a possible worst-case scenario. It remains unconfirmed whether Rockstar will release new GTA 6 footage in August or maintain the November launch date.
