Microsoft has abruptly retired the legacy third-party API that allowed external hardware and applications to control Teams meetings, leaving Elgato Stream Deck furious over the company’s lack of proper communication regarding this matter. The change effectively killed the platform’s official integration with the Stream Deck, and now users cannot control functions such as mute, camera, background blur, and reactions through the original plugin.
Although Elgato designed the Stream Deck primarily for livestreamers, its programmable buttons and extensive plugin library have turned it into a surprisingly capable desktop productivity gadget.

Previously, Elgato removed the Teams plugin from its marketplace in December 2025, after learning that Microsoft planned to discontinue the required API. Later, an Elgato representative explained on Reddit that the decision was outside their hands, with no other available API capable of delivering similar functionality.
Microsoft itself did little to communicate this change directly to ordinary Stream Deck owners. The company did warn Microsoft 365 administrators about the retirement through Message Center notice MC1266901.
Yet, users are now criticizing Microsoft through its feedback portals, arguing that the API was removed without any suitable replacement or a clear public-facing announcement. What’s more confusing is that Microsoft’s current support documentation still identifies the Stream Deck as a compatible device, instructing users to enable the third-party app API in Teams’ privacy settings.
The suggested workaround is noticeably worse And some integrated features are now missing

As of now, the only alternative is to treat the Elgato Stream Deck like a regular keyboard and manually assign Teams Keyboard shortcuts to the buttons. However, this is far from a reliable replacement, as many of the previous integrations would be unavailable.
For instance, users can assign a button on their Stream Deck to send Ctrl + Shift + M to mute the microphone, but the shortcut only works when Teams is selected as the active window. This means that the commands will be sent to the wrong application if the user switches windows. Also, the Stream Deck loses the ability to receive live microphone and camera status from Teams, and API-dependent features (like reactions and raising hand) are no longer available.
In other words, Stream Deck can still imitate a keyboard (you can assign new key shortcuts with PowerToys), but it can no longer function as a proper Teams controller. Thankfully, the device itself still works well with other videoconferencing platforms, as we found when using the Stream Deck to control Zoom and Discord Calls.
