The Nakba was the mass displacement of Palestinians by the emerging state of Israel in 1948, an historical event with an enduring social, cultural and political impact. It began under British rule (1920-1948) and continued after British occupation ended. The Nakba is not only a historical event but a foundational element of Palestinian identity, shaping collective memory, political consciousness, claims to land and justice, and a sense of loss and belonging across generations.

The University of Aberdeen holds items representing Aberdeen’s involvement in Palestine. This display is the outcome of a collaboration between University of Aberdeen academics researching Palestine, Palestinians in Aberdeen, and University Collections.
