Outraged Australian Netflix customers have vowed to permanently boycott the streaming giant, after being subjected to yet another price hike.

From late September, subscribers will soon have to fork out an extra two dollars per month for Netflix's cheapest 'Standard with ads' option, which will rise from $7.99 to $9.99 per month.

Meanwhile, the ad-free standard service will also increase by two dollars a month, up to $20.99, to view its popular movies and TV shows, including Squid Game, Virgin River and Wednesday.

But it is premium plan holders who will experience the biggest price increase, with their plans rising three dollars a month to $28.99.

Further, there is a flat one-dollar-a-month price hike across the board to add extra members to the plan.

Furious customers have taken to social media, vowing to cancel Netflix for good. 

'We're going to witness piracy by the likes never seen before,' one person sniped.

'Saw this yesterday and finally cancelled my membership of nine years,' a second added.

'Corporate staff continuing to raise prices with no increase in what they offer - there is an expectation that the public will just keep paying it. Only voting with your feet matters,' a third chipped in. 

Netflix recently sent emails to customers informing them of the price changes.

'Thank you for being a valued member since 2015,' one email shared online read.

'We hope you're enjoying everything Netflix has to offer. We're updating your monthly price to $28.99 on September 25, 2025.'

A Netflix spokesperson said: 'We offer a range of prices and plans to meet a wide range of needs. As we deliver more value to our members, we occasionally ask them to pay a bit more. 

'We’re adjusting prices in Australia with plans starting at $9.99.'

In February this year, the streaming giant also axed its basic plan, making it more expensive for users to enjoy ad-free content.

Netflix has steadily moved away from its budget-friendly roots, having hiked prices a total of six times since its launch in Australia in 2015.

The cost of Netflix's cheapest plan has jumped a whopping 43 per cent in just over 12 months, when combined with the price change in May 2024.

The company also monetised account sharing, which used to be free, and phased out its most affordable ad-free option.

When Netflix first launched, its 'basic' and ad-free subscription was only $8.99, while its premium was a mere $14.99 compared to today's price of almost $30 per month.

In 2023, Netflix also cracked down on account holders sharing passwords between households.

The platform emailed Aussie viewers in May 2023, explaining that an account was only for people within their household.

'Your Netflix account is for you and the people you live with – your household,' Netflix warned.

The latest price increases have put Netflix at the top of the list for most expensive mainstream subscription video services in Australia.

Stan remains a more affordable alternative, with plans ranging from $12 to $22, plus an additional $20 for Stan Sport.
