Interstate 80 may move fast, but it’s still not a racetrack — a lesson one C5 Corvette driver learned the hard way last week in Fairfield.
The California Highway Patrol released dash cam video Sunday showing a White C5 Corvette coupe streaking past a trooper parked on the left shoulder of I 80. The radar reading: 148 mph. And this wasn’t an empty highway — the Corvette was threading through steady afternoon traffic around 5:10 p.m. when it blasted by in the fast lane, literally.
According to CHP, the officer quickly merged back into traffic, caught up to the Corvette, and pulled the driver over without incident. The consequences, however, will linger much longer than the adrenaline rush.
CHP says the driver is now staring down:
• Two points on his license
• Steep court fines
• A likely license suspension
• And, of course, sky high insurance rates
In other words, that 148 mph burst is going to cost a whole lot more than premium fuel.
The agency used the video as a reminder that pushing triple digit speeds on a busy interstate is a recipe for disaster. Their advice was simple: slow down and obey posted limits — because the freeway is not, in fact, the newest motorsports venue in California.
The incident remains under review.
