Wie entstand die mächtigste Ozeanströmung der Erde?

Er transportiert weit mehr als 100-mal soviel Wasser wie alle Flüsse der Erde zusammen: Der Antarktische Zirkumpolarstrom rauscht ungehindert von Landmassen um den Südkontinent und ist damit ein fundamentaler Bestandteil des Klimasystems. Wie und wann in der Erdgeschichte sich dieser gewaltige Ringstrom entwickelt hat, beschreibt ein Forschungsteam unter Leitung des Alfred-Wegener-Instituts in einer aktuellen Studie in der Fachzeitschrift Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Überraschende Erkenntnis: Es brauchte mehr als die Öffnung der Meerespassagen zwischen der Antarktis und Südamerika sowie Australien.
