The “Root Cause” of Food Deserts in Chicago – Chicago Contrarian

Дата публикации: 04-08-2026 19:21:38

"Grocery stores do not disappear because corporations suddenly decide they no longer care about neighborhoods. They disappear because the economic conditions that once made those neighborhoods attractive have deteriorated to the point where the business can no longer survive."

Politicians and government ignore common financial sense. If a business has profits, it stays, if it has losses it leaves. The reasons for losses are obvious, though politicians ignore the obvious.

When the total Chicago collapse does begin, it’s all DJT’s fault.

Duh? But that’s not how it goes in the municipal bond market with Chicago city bonds. I thought it just went on forever?

Let me consolidate. Within the last few years Walmart closed two stores in the SE side of Chicago. In 17 years, these stores produced no profit. Walgreens closed several stores there as well. They simply left the doors open allowing all merchandise to be taken! The “root cause” is THEFT plain and simple!

I’m sure Chicagoans would vote wholeheartedly for raising their real estate taxes to provide “stores” where residents can freely steal as much food and drink as they want. City owned grocery stores? Great idea. Seeing how Chicago government is ridiculously efficient, well run and free from corruption, I’m sure they can run a grocery store profitably. What could go wrong? At this point, it’s really just icing on the cake. It’s just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

The profit margin in grocery stores is 2%. It doesn’t take a lot of theft to eat into that margin and make the business unprofitable..

No business can survive in crime islands.

Communities brought it on themselves. You want stores than clean up your streets. Teach morals to your people. Nothing is free in this world.
