Should Boston now host the James Beard Awards?

All eyes were on Boston this summer as millions visited the city for the previously mentioned high-profile events. Now the hunt is on for the next U.S. city to host the country’s most prestigious culinary awards, the James Beard Foundation announced on Wednesday. Should Boston toss its hat in the ring?

Since the first ceremony in 1991, the James Beard Awards have been hosted annually in just two U.S. cities — New York City until 2014 and Chicago since 2015. Chicago will continue to host through 2028 and the next chosen city will host from 2029 to 2033.

The James Beard Awards have shaped how culinary excellence is celebrated in America and recognizes restaurants, bars, hospitality, and food service across the United States.

“The James Beard Awards weekend is the biggest moment of the year in American food—a celebration unlike any other, bringing together the entire independent restaurant community to honor the creativity, innovation, and leadership shaping our nation’s food culture,” said Clare Reichenbach, CEO of the James Beard Foundation, in a statement.

Awards weekend increases visibility for the host city by bringing together thousands of the nation’s top chefs, restaurateurs, and culinary leaders for industry panels, pop-ups, and citywide events, according to the foundation.

The economic impact of this year’s awards in Chicago was $17 million and the awards cycle generated more than 7,500 pieces of media coverage and nearly 140 billion impressions, noted the foundation.

Interested cities must submit a formal Request for Information (RFI), which opened July 15 and ends Aug. 7. Destinations will be informed Aug. 17 if they have been selected for the subsequent Request for Proposal (RFP) process, which must be submitted by Sept. 30.

Last month, three New England winners took home top honors at the 2026 James Beard Awards in Chicago: Providence’s Loma, Portland restaurateur Dana Street, and Dover chef Evan Hennessey
