Another campaign is waiting in the wings for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, but it will likely remain untouched for a while…or even forever. Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, co-director and writer Jonathan Goldstein shared that a sequel to the 2023 film remains up in the air, despite an already completed script.

“We actually wrote a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons. We were hired to write it,” said the filmmaker to Screen Rant. “I don’t know that it will see the light of day for a number of financial reasons. They’re expensive movies to make, but it’d be great fun to do it. We love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would like.”

The implication is clear — it failed to make waves at the global box office, grossing US$206.5 million against an estimated production of US$150 million, shared between Paramount and Hasbro’s subsidiary Entertainment One. It’s also quite the bummer because its Rotten Tomatoes rating, including a 92 percent audience score, indicates universal enthusiastic praise, and the underwhelming performance seems to be more of a timing issue rather than quality, especially with The Super Mario Bros. Movie hot on its heels. Given the more widespread and revived interest in the tabletop title brought on by popular media such as Stranger Things and Larian Games’ Baldur’s Gate 3, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves would have a better chance if it premiered at a later date.

Directed by Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the fantasy heist adventure follows an unlikely band of heroes who must work together to find a lost relic in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting from its role-playing namesake. It stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant, Justice Smith, and Sophia Lillis, and has no connections to the previous film trilogy released between 2000 and 2012. Courtney Solomon helmed the first, while Gerry Lively took over the reins for the subsequent two entries, Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God and Dungeons & Dragons 3: The Book of Vile Darkness.

While the sequel update is disappointing, fans can look forward to some (slight) consolation. A live-action series is in the works at Netflix, with Deadpool‘s Shawn Levy and writer-showrunner Drew Crevello picking it up after a strategy shift at Paramount led to stalled progress on the project.
