Monzo Mobile is here!

I've bought the £20 unlimited plan for 1 month to see what the craic is. It's O2 via Truphone, with Truphone providing all calls/texts/data routing.

There is no HD Voice calling or 5G SA, but the inclusive roaming offering is pretty decent (EU + US, upto 25GB on unlimited) and it integrated nicely with the Monzo app as you'd expect from them if you're a customer.

I was having a look at their offering and was loving the fact that they offer roaming in places others don’t. The mid-range plan offers places like Turkey in addition to the standard EU and the package you’ve gone for offers all the places I need, Singapore, Thailand etc.

What core is it on then? Truphone’s?

Yes, the roaming data is nice. Calls and texts not so much. 60 minutes and texts per month in roaming destinations - I think that's really rather poor. I at least have used more than that abroad before (collectively).

Ooohhh… I’d completely missed that! Never crossed my mind that minutes and texts would be restricted.

Perhaps they’re assuming the Monzo generation are more into using data to chat. But for people like me, that’d be an issue.

You able to get screenshots of some of the roaming bolt on prices? Be interested to know how much it’d cost in countries like the UAE (if not already included).

Offered by 1Global, no RCS for iPhone (Monzo said they’re looking into it), no SA, no credit add on and so far nobody has confirmed if they can send or receive shortcode sms.

I installed a sim and had zero throughput even in places I know O2 would get service. WiFi calling worked though.

It’s a no until they enable 5G SA which I doubt will come via 1Global.

Off to Disney land Paris at the weekend and will see how roaming goes

This is going to be hard
You need the Monzo app to install the eSIM and I don't think you can run Monzo on rooted devices.

Access to Movistar and Orange in Spain, didn't have to force a connection. No VoLTE R, the voice is all 2G and sounds terrible.

Ok so now in Disneyland Paris.
Went through on the LeShuttle and when arrived in France the phone took about a good 10 mins to pick up a signal and the Data was BAD..very very slow..

Call quality was also bad and very tinny..

When arrived at Disney…data speed a little better and call quality half decent…

I may buy a French eSIM as the Monzo Mobile is dire at the moment

Were you able to select different networks in France @Dazzabird77 - perhaps the bad data speed was coverage in the local area?

Were you able to get good speeds on Movistar @returnofthe3G

Wondering if VoLTE will be added soon, both at home and when roaming. Surely its an oversight rather than deliberate and its on a roadmap somewhere .

When I was setting up the Maroc Telecom sim last month on iPhones, the VoLTE setting was toggled to off as was the 5G.

Same when I was trying the new Lebara core. Again, had to manually switch on the VoLTE and also the setting for 5G Auto.

Is there a VoLTE setting present for Monzo? Or is it missing / greyed out?

VoLTE DOES work at home in the UK, but not abroad (so far). They have the VoLTE icon enabled on Samsung devices.

I made Movistar do about 500Mbps with it over n78.

Ah thanks for confirming. When you said ‘No HD voice’ in your original post, I’d read that to mean no 4G calling / VoLTE.

But that’s good at least. It’s still not a bad offering from the point of view they offer inclusive roaming in more places, just means people might have to utilise that for WhatsApp / FaceTime calling rather than use the voice (which is limited anyway) until VoLTE roaming is offered.
