I am an Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Life Sciences at Tohoku University in Japan, where I run the Macroecology Lab. Our research investigates how biodiversity is distributed across space and time, how the way we measure biodiversity affects these patterns, and how global change will alter them. We have eclectic interests and thus investigate a broad range of taxa (e.g., plankton, insects, and vertebrates) and geographical extents (e.g., Japan, Asia, global). We are currently focusing on how to predict and map functional diversity to ascertain ecosystem services provisions, how to calculate Essential Biodiversity Variables for Asia, how to measure and report ecosystem restoration success, and how to effectively employ remote wildlife monitoring techniques to estimate occupancy and abundance, among other topics. As we code a lot, we also love open software and sometimes produce packages to share with the research community.
