Mark Williams recently went for a taste test at the Big Rock Cafe, this is what he found:

The Big Rock cafe is located bang in the middle of the Porthmadog high street.

It’s just a short stroll from the harbour and has mountain views from their doorstep. Most mornings, you will see a queue of people waiting patiently outside for their famous monkey bread.

Graham and Charlotte Whiteman and their family of eight children have been running the Big Rock café since 2005. The micro bakery, on the crossroads bakes daily spelt, bloomer bread, sausage rolls and cinnamon buns.

You enter through their corner door and are faced with a unique range of breads, cakes and doughnuts. The cafe is much bigger than it looks on first glance. If you carry on through to the back, they have two rustic seating areas, one under a vaulted ceiling featuring a large skylight which floods the place with natural light.

The menu offers interesting food options with strange names such as rarebit wham bam, lamb bigini, Guando and muddy welly (garlic mushrooms, potato, cheese spinach, onion, nutmeg, in puff pastry)

Breakfast deals include breakfast stacks with sausage, bacon and hash browns and breakfast burritos with bacon sausage beans potato egg and cheese. Their best- selling products include homity pies with potato, spinach, cheddar, garlic and nutmeg with many veggie and vegan options also available.

You can also order products on line through their website for popular items such as Bara Brith, Welsh Cakes, Monkey Chow, Biscotti, Rye Sourdough and Granola.

We joined the long queue of customers to get our hands on some of the famous monkey bread. Monkey bread originates from Hungry. It consists of soft pieces of baked dough, which can be pulled apart and eaten without utensils. The bread is usually baked in a Bundt pan, with a hole in the centre often filled with jams or sauces.

This version of monkey bread was covered in cashew nuts and pumpkin seeds. The tear and share bread had a delicious sweet cinnamon sauce running right through it. After tasting it, we could see why nearly every customer in the queue was ordering it.

The doughnuts on the counter looked difficult to resist, some had huge blobs of jam or cream on the top of them. We saw weird things like ‘five in a boat bread’ alongside some more traditional rock cakes, which were placed under neath the counter. Everywhere you looked, there was something for sale, from big rock mugs, t shirts and big rock coffee beans.

We also decided to try a chocolate cookie, which was as big and flat as a frisbee. The crumbly and chewy biscuit had an intense chocolate taste and an almost brownie like texture. Perfect for dipping into your frothy coffee.

We also tried a rich chocolate brownie, which was as dense and big as a brick. It really stood out, due to its rich and delicious taste. It wasn’t that easy to slice into half, but needs must and we just about managed it. I had a strong chocolate sugar rush with every bite.

I needed a hot drink after all that delicious chewing. The takeaway mocha was super velvety and chocolatey. It took a while to be made, but it was one of the best I had tasted in quite a while. The barista melted some real chocolate and whisked it furiously before adding it to the coffee.

The difference in using this method, instead of using basic chocolate powder was well worth the effort. The staff members remained patient and friendly, despite the long queues outside.

The big rock is a lovely old-fashioned café with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. They certainly have a few unique and interesting bakery items on sale here.

We especially enjoyed the monkey bread, which was particularly popular with the punters. So, if you find yourself in the Porthmadog area, swing around and grab yourself some dough, before it all sells out.
