This historic Welsh coastal town blends medieval charm with modern attractions, earning recognition as one of the UK's top seaside destinations for 2026
This historic destination nestled along the Welsh coast boasts a thriving cultural and culinary landscape, according to travel experts who rate it highly.
The UK's coastline has captured public attention like never before, following the launch of the much-anticipated King Charles III Coastal Path that renders the entire UK completely accessible on foot. From lesser-known coastal settlements to iconic seaside resorts, visitors are now discovering locations they might never have encountered otherwise.
Against this backdrop, Time Out has compiled their 14 essential seaside destinations to explore in 2026, with their number five pick situated along the Welsh shoreline.
Located where Ceredigion borders Pembrokeshire lies the tranquil town of Cardigan (Aberteifi) , positioned at number eight on Time Out's ranking. Its picturesque natural surroundings contributed to its elevated position, combined with its outstanding dining establishments and contemporary venues that infuse a vibrant, youthful energy throughout the historic settlement.
While it may appear traditional from first glance, closer inspection reveals the town possesses far more depth than initially apparent. Merging heritage with modernity, Cardigan serves as a destination for gastronomy and distinctive retail experiences, positioned perfectly between opportunities to discover its natural landscapes and historical landmarks, reports Wales Online.
Cardigan is filled with an array of independent shops, both old and new, with plenty of vintage and antique stores for treasure hunting. One particularly popular spot for this is The Projects, tucked away on Middle Mwldan, although it's hard to miss with a huge, beautiful mural on its doors, with homeware and second-hand furniture offering an ever-changing stock of household gems.
Other vintage items can be sourced at DJK Collectables and Keith's Antiques in the market for those wanting a proper dig-in. Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox
Mundos is another shop with a delightful selection of gifts and clothing, while fashion lovers must visit the iconic Hiut Denim factory. Here, there's the chance to see where the renowned Hiut jeans are made, famously worn by Meghan Markle.
As far as food goes, despite its small size, Cardigan has a large offering of different cosines in a whole range of environments, with Time Out making note of a few standout spots. Their write-up paid notice to Crwst for their "sickeningly good brunch", which has made its way on to Britain's best bakeries' lists.
Grain also got a mention for serving "impeccable pizza and pints" with a relaxing setting by a riverside courtyard. While the traditional boozer, the Castle Inn, has a constant stream of pub quizzes, live music and comedy nights for those not wanting the night to end.
At the heart of this beautiful town is the grand Cardigan Castle, which overlooks the river and offers a rich history in Welsh literature and music spanning over 800 years. They host a year-round programme of events, activities and experiences for all ages to enjoy, from festivals to workshops and exhibits.
Just a 10-minute drive out of the town centre and you'll find yourself at Mwnt Beach, which not only offers idyllic views out onto the sea from a quiet bay but also offers the chance to see bottlenose dolphins. It attracts plenty of tourists throughout the year and is a much-loved spot by locals wanting a dip or a walk up to the small church at the bottom of the hill.
A TripAdvisor review reads: "We have been here many times, and we never get tired with the Beaty of Mwnt. The church is lovely and quaint, but the beach is just wonderful.
"We have been paddleboarding in the past only to be joined by seals, which is so pleasurable. Mwnt is so beautiful any time of the year."
It's easy to see why, with its wonderful blend of old and new, this seaside town should be on your list of places to visit in 2026.
