5 February 2026— Three SSA grant programs and the Government Relations Fellowship will accept applications in February, offering members the financial support they need to expand their professional networks, share their research and help advance the field of seismology worldwide.

The Society’s Global Travel Grant program helps early-career and student members participate in scientific conferences and workshops anywhere in the world. Recent grantee Jack Andrew Smith said his favorite part of attending the 2025 Geoscience Society of New Zealand Annual Conference in Auckland was “developing personal relationships with scientists from across New Zealand,” adding that in-person conferences are ideal for discussing methods and getting up to date on data collections as much as for “having a laugh and building friendships.”

Paul Andrew Spudich Grants support early-career and student researchers whose work focuses on earthquake source physics or ground motion prediction. Jeena Yun used her recent grant to attend the 2025 International Joint Workshop on Slow-to-Fast Earthquakes in Kochi, Japan. “I extended my knowledge on cutting-edge research on not only slow and fast earthquakes in various subduction zones, but also their structural and geological properties,” she said, adding that she built connections with possible collaborators from several countries.

Open to all members, the Community Grant program supports the organization of small scientific conferences, workshops and professional development events. Umar Afegbua Kadiri and Maureen Chioma Umeh used their recent grant to organize the “Training Course on Seismological Data Acquisition and Processing Using SeisComP Software” in Nigeria. Created in response to rising seismic activity, the workshop sparked new plans to establish a global earthquake monitoring center for the region.

The Government Relations Policy Fellowship offers the opportunity to influence policy processes that impact seismology. Open to student and early-career members, the fellowship combines a grant program that supports participation in the Geoscience Congressional Visits Day (Geo-CVD) with service on the Board’s Government Relations Committee. Learn more about the specific requirements for the fellowship here.

SSA will accept applications for these three grant programs from 1–28 February, and applications for the Government Relations Fellowship from 1 February –31 March.
