28 July 2026— This July a $5,000 SSA Community Grant brought 42 students, teachers and early-career scientists from Nepal, India and Bhutan together in Kathmandu for hands-on training. The event, EARTH-Quake 2026: Enhancing Advanced Research, Technical Skills, and Human Capacity in Seismology, took place over three days at the Central Department of Physics, Tribhuvan University, and was jointly organized by the Nepal Seismological Association (NSA) and the department.

Participants moved between keynote lectures, including one from SSA President and Chief Guest, Zhigang Peng on modern earthquake detection techniques ranging from template matching to machine learning. Participants also installed seismometers, collected data and learned to locate earthquakes and characterize local site conditions using the HVSR technique, a relevant method for earthquake-safe building designs in a growing city like Kathmandu.

When asked afterward to sum up the experience in a single line, one participant wrote, “a seedbed for future seismologists.” Another called it “an outstanding initiative that empowers researchers through learning, collaboration, and inclusive participation.” For many, the impact went beyond the technical skills. “A catalyst for empowering the seismology community through collaboration, learning, and innovation,” one participant said. Another described the workshop as “a highly supportive and impactful program for strengthening community safety.”

Seismic monitoring in Nepal is growing, and specialized training remains an important part of this development, particularly for the students and early-career researchers who will carry this work forward. The 42 participants who trained together this July are now part of a research network that spans three countries — one that organizers say is already staying in touch.
