The offence started fast, which has been a point of emphasis.

The special teams unit gave Calgary one of the signature plays of the night.

And there were those monster personal efforts from the likes of Ben Labrosse, Adams and — of course — Tyreik McAllister.

The night belonged in many ways to McAllister.

The first-year Stampeders runback artist produced a performance that will be remembered far beyond one week on the CFL schedule, becoming the first player in league history to score a rushing touchdown, a receiving touchdown and a missed field-goal return touchdown in the same game.

It’s not just a big game.

It’s one for the record books.

And it came at exactly the right time for a Calgary team coming off two straight losses and trying to stop the season from turning south.

“Super good — I love it,” McAllister told Stamps TV. “We needed this. You know … we came in coming off a two-game losing streak, and we was right there in those games, and we felt like one play could have changed both of those games. We really needed this, and hopefully, we can carry into the next couple games.”

The missed field-goal return was the kind of play that flips a game from competitive to chaotic in a hurry. McAllister saw space, trusted his read and was gone.

“Kind of similar to the one I had against Saskatchewan (in Week 3),” McAllister said. “I played it one way, and I seen everybody kind of flowing, so I just cut it through. And once I got through that first wave, I seen nothing but green grass.

“So here I go.”

It’s the kind of play that makes highlight reels.

It is also the kind of play that can jolt an entire sideline.

For a team trying to build belief, it matters when one player does something nobody in league history has done before. It matters when the group sees proof that a game can be broken open from anywhere — offence, defence or special teams.

McAllister was not alone.

Certainly, cornerback Labrosse stepped up.

He delivered his own remarkable night on defence, picking off three passes and tying a Stampeders team record for most thefts in a game in his start at field-side corner in place of injured Adrian Greene.

“I feel like I played good — I feel like the whole team played good,” Labrosse told Stamps TV. “I feel like the whole defence played good. We’re just all on the same page, and that’s what it takes.

“I think their offence felt that, and they just couldn’t really do much about it.”

Asked about the three interceptions, Labrosse had the right mix of pride and greed.

“Feels good,” said the Stamps’ first-round pick of the 2024 CFL Draft. “I feel like I should have got four, but it’s OK. I’ll take the tie.

“Maybe another game.”

Then there was Adams leading the offence.

“We’ve been talking about starting fast,” Adams said. “But not just starting fast. Getting points and starting fast and not just flipping the field or anything like that — and that’s what we did.”

Adams added his own piece of CFL history. He now has a share of a league record — one associated with his coach, Dickenson — for touchdown passes without an interception.

That’s 20 TDs against zero INTs to start the campaign.

That kind of quarterback play gives Calgary a championship foundation. Adams has brought confidence, movement and explosiveness to the offence, but the most important number may be the one that isn’t there …

Weak-side linebacker Kyle Wilson also had a big night — with five tackles and being in the middle of the action — as part of the team’s broader defensive push, adding to the feeling that the win was not carried by one unit or one player, but by a full roster finally moving in the same direction.
