A Derbyshire dad visited the doctors more than a dozen times before receiving a devastating diagnosis.
Dad-of-two Mayo Parkin, from Ripley, is now raising £80,000 to afford treatment abroad after exhausting all treatments since he was diagnosed with a rare sarcoma known as a GIST (Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour) back in July 2024.
The diagnosis came 18 months after the self-employed electrician first noticed symptoms, during which he says he visited Ivy Grove Surgery in Ripley 15 times.
The 35-year-old's mum, Debbie, says the family was pleading for scans and a deeper investigation into Mayo's persistent stomach pain, and they were eventually told that Mayo had bowel cancer.
Scans finally revealed a 10cm-by-12cm tumour that had been left to grow until it perforated, which left Mayo "on the floor" with pain.
"How many times does somebody have to go to the doctors with the same pain when nothing's working?" said Debbie.
"At what point do you say right, they need a scan?"
Mayo began targeted therapy once his care was transferred across county lines to Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre (QMC), which initially shrank the tumour by nearly half.
Things were looking up, but a blood clot in Mayo's liver put him on blood thinners, which caused the large blood vessels around the tumour to bleed heavily internally.
This led to a life-or-death emergency surgery on December 4, 2024.
The family says they were told the surgery would be carried out by a "sarcoma specialist" - but they say, without their knowledge, it was carried out by a general transplant surgeon, something they say they "wouldn't have agreed to" had they been told.
After the procedure, the family was apparently told "we've got it all" - indicating that the tumour had been removed - giving them the impression that the cancer was all but gone.
Mayo's vocal cord was also dislocated during the surgery, leaving him unable to speak for three months - but the family was optimistic.
But Debbie says this "hope" turned out to be false reassurance when, seven weeks after Mayo's surgery, he became critically ill once again.
The surgery had caused a fistula, causing his bladder and bowel to join together, which left him isolated in the hospital with severe infections
His surgical wound also failed to heal properly, leaving a "great big massive hole in his abdomen" that took months to repair.
During this stay at QMC, his mother said she witnessed "shocking" hygiene standards, recalling a cleaner "using the exact same cloth to clean the toilet, the sink, the shower, and even the bristles of Mayo's toothbrush.
Since January last year, Mayo has been in and out of the hospital with recurring infections, and the targeted therapies have stopped working.
His cancer has aggressively spread to his lung, liver, and lymph nodes, with three large tumours doubling in size to around 10 centimetres in just two months.
He has severely weakened, dropping in weight from 13st to just 9st, and while he was given a newly approved drug in April 2026 as a "last line" of defence in the UK, the NHS essentially told the family to prepare for the end of his life.
With his 12-year-old daughter, Macie, and 10-year-old son, Lucas, at home, Mayo and his family refuse to give up - and have since set up a fundraiser as they try to raise £80,000 for treatment abroad.
"I am now at a point where the NHS have no more available treatments," said Mayo.
"We have researched other options for my cancer treatment, and the one that seems to best suit what I need is going to cost me up to £80,000.
"This treatment isn’t available in the UK, so this cost also includes my travel.
"I am now at a point where this treatment is incredibly urgent, and we have been fortunate to find an opening in the month, which is why I need your help."
In less than a week, more than £5,000 has been raised, with each donation leaving Mayo and Debbie in "floods of tears".
"It's just been incredible to see so many people come together to help us, it's something we never could have imagined, but we knew we had to try something," added Debbie.
"We were both sitting crying this morning. It just makes you realise how kind people can be. We give to charities because people need help, and now he's the one who needs the help.
"We can only thank everyone who has donated from the bottom of our hearts."

Derbyshire Live contacted both Ivy Grove Surgery and Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) for comment.
Lisa La Mola, head of clinical decisions oncology, radiotherapy, malignant haematology, and emergency pathways, said: "We are very sorry to hear that Mayo and his family felt the care they received fell short of their expectations.
"While we cannot comment on the details of individual cases, gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) are a rare form of sarcoma, particularly in patients under the age of 50.
"Surgery is a common treatment option for sarcoma patients and may be carried out by a range of specialist surgeons, depending on the location and complexity of the tumour.
"Where emergency life-saving surgery is required, we will seek to ensure the appropriate surgeon is identified to undertake this procedure as quickly as possible.
"As with any major cancer surgery, there is a risk of post-operative complications, and patients with sarcoma are often considered to be at higher risk due to the nature of their condition and treatment.
"We take all patient and family feedback extremely seriously and remain committed to listening to and engaging with Mayo and his family regarding their concerns."
A spokesperson for Ivy Grove Surgery said: "We are unable to discuss individual cases, to protect patient confidentiality.
"We would encourage all patients to make contact with the practice to discuss any concerns they may have about their care."
