Heat index could top 100 degrees before severe storm threat returns to Chicago area

After a stretch of cooler weather, the summer heat is poised to return this weekend, with heat index values expected to reach anywhere between 95 and 100 degrees.
Readings started in the low 60s on Saturday afternoon accompanied by low humidity, though a warmup was expected later in the day. NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack said he’ll be reaching for the thermostat, turning the air conditioning on and closing up the windows after keeping them open over the last few days.
Some clouds lingered in the morning and were expected to continue drifting their way through, although some breaks in the cloud cover were likely later in the day. Sack said some sunshine is likely in the evening.
Temperatures will top out in the low 80s, making for a comfortable day overall, though it’ll likely be muggy as dewpoints rise.
Sunday will likely begin with muggy conditions under partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 70s.
The big story will be the return of southwesterly breezes and hotter temperatures in the afternoon. Highs will top out around 92 degrees, meteorologists said, but heat index values could reach anywhere from 95 to 100 degrees.
Late Sunday and into early Monday, chances for showers and storms could return. Forecast models show multiple waves of storms approaching the area, but Sack explained it’s difficult to pinpoint when storms may arrive.
Showers and storms are expected on and off throughout the day, with some storms potentially becoming severe. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the Chicago area under a slight risk for severe weather, level 2 out of 5, with gusty winds, large hail and brief heavy downpours possible.
The possibility of a tornado can’t be ruled out.
Monday will likely be even hotter, with heat index values climbing to between 100 and 105 degrees.
After the severe threat moves out on Monday, slightly cooler temperatures and a little bit less humidity are expected in the following days.
