Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty has kept himself busy in the 20-plus years since the legendary band went on an indefinite hiatus. The musician has carved out a nice career in film and television scoring, including the riveting new documentary Stolen Kingdom.

The film focuses on a group of Walt Disney World fanatics who take their love of the amusement park too far, with their adventures into the dark corners of “The Most Magical Place on Earth” leading to a life of underground criminal activity.

Canty’s scoring résumé includes the National Geographic series Hard Time, a couple of “30 for 3o” episodes for ESPN, as well as various documentaries and films. One of his latest projects is the aforementioned Stolen Kingdom, directed by Joshua Bailey.

Consequence caught up with Canty to discuss Stolen Kingdom, as well as his career in film/TV scoring.

“There was a lot about the film that resonated with me, mostly because it felt like a bunch of young skater dudes,” Canty told us in the video interview above. “The vibe was very familiar to me… I think that Josh and I, even though we’re generationally different, we have a lot in common. We kinda come from the same punk-rock backgrounds, indie backgrounds, and filmmaking backgrounds.”

He added, “I really love the film… It has this really interesting trajectory of people getting into it for love, and for interest in Disney, and these rides that are going away… and then they get more naughty about it.”

Beyond Stolen Kingdom, Canty also discussed his experience on other film and television scores, his work on producing music for other bands, his current band The Messthetics, and the movies and composers who’ve influenced him over the years.
