Reacher star Alan Ritchson is breaking his silence on the viral motorcycle fight outside his Tennessee home that happened earlier this year.

Ritchson made headlines back in March after he was filmed laying a smackdown on one of his neighbours outside a home in Brentwood, Tenn., in front of his kids.

In a new appearance on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, Ritchson, 43, says he was “terrified” in the moments leading up to the exchange.

“It was the scariest thing I’ve ever been through. I don’t like that kind of conflict. I like to work. I don’t like things that are ill-gotten. I don’t like bad press,” Ritchson said.

According to TMZ, which first published video of the altercation, alleged victim Ronnie Taylor said the dispute started when Ritchson was “flying at excessive speed, revving his engine and disturbing the peace” in a “well-to-do” suburb of Nashville.

The argument escalated when Ritchson allegedly sped through the neighbourhood again, this time with his two young children in tow.

Taylor told the outlet that he asked the father of three, “Can you f***ing stop this please?”

Ritchson told Shepard that he had “never met that guy ever in my life.”

“Never seen him before. He lied to TMZ about (saying) the day before, ‘Hey, buddy. Slow down.’ None of that was true,” he said.

The Motor City star said he got physical with Taylor after he was shoved.

“He was huge, the same size as me. … And he was heated, so he stepped into my grill and I pushed him back … I get close to him and I smell alcohol … At that point, there’s no more conversation. I’ve got to protect me, and I’ve got to protect my kids and I’ve got to get us off this street safely. And that means getting him out of the picture. So I hit the guy. As it’s happening, I’m like, I really can’t hurt this guy. I don’t want to knock him out. I don’t want to break a bone … But I wanted just enough to where he was like, ‘Oh I see where this is going, I don’t want that,’” he said.

Cops concluded it was self-defence

Ritchson didn’t face any charges after footage from a body camera he was wearing showed that Taylor was the instigator in the fight.

“If anything makes you go, ‘Maybe God is real’ … If I hadn’t had that, I’d probably still be in jail. The cops came to arrest me that day and they only had (a recording from another neighbour) to go off of,” he explained. “Thank God … (my footage) changed the course of my life forever.”

After the fight, Ritchson said his children refuse to ride bikes with him and that his neighbour “robbed me” of sharing that experience with them.

“He took a lot from me,” he said.

Ritchson admitted that the bike was loud, but insisted that he wasn’t speeding.

“The bike that I was riding that day, I had just received. It was custom-built for me and it’s exceptionally loud. … I was just kind of playing with this thing,” he said.

After the fight went viral, Brentwood Police Department Captain Steven Pepin told Postmedia in a statement that Ritchson acted in self-defence and wouldn’t face charges.

“Mr. Ritchson’s actions were found to be in self-defence. Although a potential reckless endangerment charge was considered, Mr. Ritchson declined to pursue charges,” Pepin said in late March.

“With the agreement of the District Attorney’s Office, the case is now closed, and no further action will be taken.”
