Three people have been rushed to hospital following a suspected by an "XL-bully type dog".

Police said they were called just before 3:30pm today to reports of a dog bite at an address in Barrie Way, Bolton.

An air ambulance landed at Hall i' Th' Wood, a manor house in Bolton now used as a museum, with paramedics attending the scene alongside police dog units and armed officers.

The force confirmed that three people were taken to hospital by ambulance and that a dog had been seized, reported by witnesses to be an "XL-bully type".

Armed police were seen going into the house, alongside a dog handler who removed the animal from the house and placed it in an animal transport van.

GMP said that enquiries were ongoing with no arrests made, reported the Manchester Evening News.

In a full statement a spokesperson said: "Officers were called just before 3.30pm on Wednesday 29 July 2026 to a report of a dog bite at an address on Barrie Way in Bolton.

"Emergency services attended and three people have been taken by ambulance to hospital. One dog has been seized. No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing."

The Government moved to ban XL bullies in 2024 with then Prime Minister Rishi Sunak saying they posed a “danger to our communities” following a spate of attacks by them. Statistics show that incidents involving dogs have risen by more than a third over the previous five years - and more than a third involved the now banned dog.

Unregistered pets can be seized and owners fined and prosecuted. February 1, 2024, was the deadline for owners to register the banned dogs with around 40,000 put down on the list before that date.

Other banned breeds in the UK include the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Fila Brasileiro.

And the government announced last month it will introduce new safety measures for banned dog breeds. In an update shared in Parliament on June 9, it was said that the new measures will protect children from dangerous dogs at home and will strengthen safeguards around banned breeds, including XL Bully types.

From November 1, 2026, owners must not leave a child under the age of 12 in close proximity to a banned breed dog in a domestic setting or other private settings without adult supervision. This will be a condition of the Certificate of Exemption, which allows owners to legally keep a banned breed.
