A “suspicious package with wires protruding from it” was found by police outside a north suburban hospital during an investigation prompted by a bomb threat on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
People were asked to avoid the area surrounding Endeavor Health Evanston Hospital, located at 2650 Ridge Avenue, amid police activity involving drones that also prompted nearby residents to be evacuated, authorities said around 5:30 p.m.
Authorities urged people to avoid the area and follow all directions from emergency personnel and motorists were also warned to expect road closures and traffic delays during the investigation that spanned several hours.
In an update around 8:15 p.m., police said the “the area is now secure and has reopened. The item in question is not a threat to the public at this time.”
The incident unfolded when police responded to a bomb threat against the hospital around 5 p.m., authorities said.
Responding officers established a “secure perimeter around the facility,” and “surrounding areas were evacuated and access to the area was restricted to protect patients, staff, visitors, and the public” as a precaution, authorities said.
While investigating, officers found “a suspicious package with wires protruding from it outside the building,” authorities said.
The Evanston Fire Department deployed a drone to get an aerial assessment of the scene and minimize risk to emergency personnel, and the Cook County Bomb Squad is also assisting with the investigation.
