A film does not always need a big actor or massive marketing budget to draw audiences to theatres. Kannada film Premada Oorali is recent proof of how word of mouth can change a movie's fortunes. Made on a reported budget of around Rs 2.5 crore, Manoj Kumar's directorial venture has emerged as a box-office surprise despite featuring a cast without major commercial stars.

Released on September 25, 2026, the film has reportedly collected over Rs 30 crore, turning into a talking point in Karnataka. But behind its success lies a difficult production journey and hope.

Premada Oorali: How a small-budget Kannada film became a hit

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Premada Oorali opened with approximately Rs 9 lakh across 60 shows. The initial response was modest, but positive word of mouth helped the film gain momentum over the following days.

Its collections rose to Rs 55 lakh on the third day, followed by Rs 65 lakh on Monday and Rs 95 lakh on Tuesday. On its second Sunday, the film earned Rs 3.85 crore, taking its India net collection to Rs 14.57 crore at that point, according to the figures provided.

On Day 15, Premada Oorali collected Rs 4.5 crore across 1,178 shows, with an occupancy rate of 57%. On Day 16, the film was running across 831 shows and had earned Rs 3.73 crore in India net collections by 5 pm, according to Sacnilk’s live estimates. Its total India net collection stood at Rs 37.20 crore, while its India gross collection reached Rs 43.45 crore.

The film tells a story about family relationships set against a rural backdrop. Its appeal among family audiences, coupled with recommendations from viewers, helped it attract more people to theatres.

The film stars Rangayana Raghu, Shree Raam, Thapaswini Poonacha and Ramika Shivu. It is produced by Vannila Entertainment, Janakamma Productions and Mukul Gowda Productions.

The film's performance has also drawn comparisons with Yash's Toxic. While Toxic reportedly collected around Rs 80 crore in Karnataka, Premada Oorali has attracted attention for the returns it has generated relative to its modest production cost. Another Kannada film, Love Mocktail 3, reportedly earned Rs 18.55 crore against a budget of around Rs 2 crore.

But a movie makes money not only on what it earns at the box office, as reported, but also on the terms of its distribution deal, how much is spent on marketing, and the share that goes to the producers. The figures available indicate Premada Oorali performing well against budget, but do not make a clear statement about profitability across the industry.

Manoj Kumar’s struggle to make this small Kannada movie

The road for the film was not smooth. Thapaswini Poonacha, one of the lead actors, recounted an emotional incident during the filming of an artificial rain sequence, where they nearly ran out of water.

In an account of the incident, Poonacha described how the team was shooting at around 6.30 pm when the water needed for the artificial rain ran out. Local villagers stepped in and pumped water from their borewell to help the crew continue filming.

During the scramble, Kumar stepped away to speak to his mother. Poonacha and co-star Shree Raam overheard him, "Keep your thaali ready to pawn tomorrow; today’s budget is over, and if we don’t get the shot now, we must extend the shoot.’ That broke us emotionally.“

Poonacha recalled that Kumar had been particular about how her character, Rukmini, should express sadness, insisting that her tears should gather in her eyes rather than fall too soon.

The scene eventually came together in a single take, with the rain, camera movements and the actors' emotions falling into place. After the director called cut, he hugged the actors and told his mother that she would not need to pawn her thaali because they had completed the shot.

National Award-winning director had struggled to find work

Premada Oorali marks another important chapter for Kumar, who previously directed Akshi. The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Kannada and was reportedly made on a budget of Rs 23 lakh, with filming completed over 55 days.

Despite the recognition, he struggled to find work after his debut. He said in an interview with Cinema Express that the National Award did not immediately translate into new opportunities, as people were reluctant to back a filmmaker associated with art-house cinema. Co-writer and producer Devendra eventually stepped in with his savings to support the project.

With little money left for promotions after filming, the team adopted an unconventional strategy. They printed wedding-style invitation cards and distributed them to commuters on buses and trains, asking people to give the film a chance.

Kumar also thanked autorickshaw drivers who put up posters and distributor Jayanna who helped the film reach a larger audience. He recalled how the film initially struggled to attract viewers before word of mouth began spreading, which led to more theatres scheduling shows.
